Blue Star Cloche

Blue Star Cloche

blue star cloche crochet pattern

You Will Need:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Small amounts of contrasting yarn for accent.
  • Size H/8 hook (5.00mm)

Note: Pattern stitch (ps) is [2dc ch2]

To Begin: Ch 3. Join with sl st. (or use a “magic ring” to begin)

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Work into ring: dc ch 2. 4 ps. Sl st to join.

Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2). *2 ps in next ch sp* 4 times. [1ps 1dc] in next ch sp. Sl st to join.

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). [1 dc ch 2 1 ps] in first ch sp. *1 ps in next ch sp. 2 ps in next ch sp* 4 times. 1 ps in next ch sp. Sl st to join.

Round 4: Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2). *2 ps in next ch sp. 1 ps in next 2 ch sps.* 4 times. 2 ps in next ch sp. 1 ps in next ch sp. 1 dc in next ch sp. Sl st to join.

Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). [1 dc ch 2 1 ps] in first ch sp. *1 ps in next 4 ch sps. 2 ps in next ch sp.* 3 times. 1 ps in next 4 ch sps. Sl st to join.

Check your gauge now! You will now have a wobbly looking shape which is approximately 6” across. There are a total of 24 ch sps around the perimeter. Got it? Good! Continue. Too big or too small? Adjust your hook size accordingly and start over. Sorry, Charlie!

Round 6: Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2). 1 ps in next 23 ch sps. Dc in last ch sp. Sl st to join.

Round 7: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). [1 dc ch 2] in first ch sp. 1 ps in next 23 ch sps. Sl st to join.

Rounds 8-15: Repeat Rounds 6-7

Round 16 (Shell border): Ch 3 (counts as a dc for the last shell). sc between first two dcs. *7dc between the next 2 dcs. Sc between next 2 dcs.* 11 times. 6 dc between last two dcs. Sl st to join.

Finish off. Weave in end.

Star Accent: Use worsted weight yarn and an F hook.

Ch 2. 5sc in second ch from hook. Sl st to join.
*Ch 3. sc in second ch from hook. hdc in next ch. sl st to next sc in ring.* 5 times.

Finish off.

Weave the ends to the center-back of the star. Use them to securely tie or stitch the star onto your cloche.

No one in my family knows I crochet, so we'll see what they say about my hat. It seems a little big, though I did use a G hook and skipped rows 14-15. It is cute, though!!! Suggestions to make a smaller hat?
  • I am going to use this to match the scarf I am making for my sister! I know the scarf is supposed to go with the "professional" hat but this is so much cuter and still has the shell edging! Me and my sister are very "bohemian" so this will be awesome.

Oh and I LOVE the yoga-mat bag! I lost my yoga-mat in my recent move from PA to WA, but when I get another one I am def making that bag! (I also have to find a yoga group/class out here grr...)
  • Missie, yours is really cute! Thanks for posting the picture. :)

I love this hat! I took a few tries 'cause I kept adding stitches to each row. I figured it out though, and had to eliminate a couple rows to fit my head! Thanks for such a great pattern! Here's my hat (I made a flower instead of a star though!)

    Hi,
I love the blue star cloche hat and I saw the cupcake clutch on your flikr page and was wondering if you had thought of putting a cupcake on the hat instead of the star?? If you wouldn't mind could you send me the pattern for this cloche hat with a cupcake instead of the star?! Thanks very much.
  • hey meghan... the first round looks like this:
Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Work into ring: dc ch 2. 4 ps. Sl st to join.

The first part (the ch 3, then dc and ch 2) is essentially 1 pattern stitch. So there ends up being 5 pattern stitches in the first round.

I hope you try it again and it works out!

Another problem I've encountered: if I try the three stitches in between increases I'm not getting 24 ch sp.

I'm going to have to put this down for the night, it looks like. It will only be harder when I'm tired.
  • Meghan
I'm having trouble figuring out if there should be four ps in that first round or five. I know I should be able to do the math but I keep confusing myself.

If it is four ps in that first round--then shouldn't the fifth round be 1ps in next 3 stitches and then the increase?

I really do love this though! I'm so excited to get it done and show it off!

aw vanessa, that's cute! I like the bottom picture a lot. Congratulations on your first hat!

I love this design! It's so easy and very cute. I've done several afghans but this was my first hat. I found the pattern this morning and did it this afternoon! I did it a bit loosely so it's a little big, but still looks great. A bit warm to wear for a while yet, though. It's a perfect project for a left over half skein of yarn of any color really. Mine's pink. ^_^

What do you think? Star on the right or the left?

Hey Kat, I'm glad you want to make the cloche! The ps abbreviation is explained at the beginning of the pattern:
Note: Pattern stitch (ps) is [2dc ch2]

So every time you see "ps" you'll crochet 2 double crochets and then chain 2.

    I hope that helps.
  • Kat
I'd love to try your cloche pattern, but I'm new to crocheting and haven't seen the abbreviation ps before. If you have time would you clue this newbie in? Thanks so much!!

Kim, your cloche looks GREAT! I look forward to seeing your others as you make them too.

I had some left over bits of kettle died wool and decided to try this cloche. I've never had success with hats before. But this was very easy to do, and I like how it feels. It even fits!

Now, to try this with some Artsy/Craftsy type yarn. XD

    Thank you.
