Over the holidays, yayanana gave me her old bread machine, so I decided to try it out with a loaf of chocolate bread. It’s not a desserty brownie type thing. It’s more like a normal bread-texture with a cocoa flavor, not too sweet. It’s great warmed up, with a schmear of butter on it.
Next time, though, I think I’d use the “sandwich” setting on my machine, which supposedly makes a bread with a softer crust. The crust on this one was pretty crunchy, and didn’t match the flavor of the bread.
So here’s the recipe for ya!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 Tablespoon yeast
- a little less than 2 cups flour (all-purpose, or bread flour)
- 1/3 cup of cocoa
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 Tablespoon (which is 4 1/2 teaspoons) oil
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cups water
Add everything into the bread machine in the recommended order. For most machines, I think that’s liquids, dry ingredients, then yeast. My machine has a little container for the yeast, and it releases it at the correct moment. Set your machine, and wait until it beeps, “I’m finished!!!”
It’s pretty yummy right out of the machine, but it’s a lot easier to slice once it cools.
Try it out and let me know how you like it!

Hi! I'm Emily. I'm a Navy wife and stay at home mom of two beautiful children. I cook simple, delicious, grain-free recipes, do crafts, decorate my home on a budget, and keep a happy household. I tandem breastfeed, babywear, cloth diaper, practice elimination communication, homebirth, and co-sleep, but I'm not a hippie.

I know this post isn’t exactly new, but I plan to try this recipe and was hoping you could answer a question for me. What size loaf does this recipe make? My bread machine has three size settings (1.0/1.5 lb, 2.0 lb, and 2.5 lb) – which should I use?
Update: I used the 1.0/1.5 lb setting because it didn’t seem like there were enough ingredients for a larger loaf. I used the sandwich setting and this turned out small but really tasty!

I am new to the website world so i am still getting started, but it is going well so far. i really love your site and come often to browse your recipes. i am very inspired by your diligence.

Congratulations on your pregnancy too btw.
And I love that ode to your failed dinner poem! Reminds me a lot of the reviews on allrecipes.com …. people are like “I didn't have those ingredients so I did it totally differently and it sucked!!! 1 star!”
What's your blog URL? I'd love to see it!
I prefer if people post a write-up in their own words with a link to my original post, so if you did that, yay!
It makes me sad when people copy my posts or recipes and re-post them on their own site though… I'd rather they point their readers to me since they obviously like me enough, you know?
I put this up on my blog and gave you the credit. Is that OK??

Oh my goodness!!!! I just made this in my bread machine and it was SOOOO good! I ate it with peanut butter and it tasted a bit like a bittersweet reese peanut butter cup. Definitely a keeper recipe.

it's look tasty
Mmmmm… Ruby Tuesdays has some GOOD croutons!
Interesting! It made me think of pumpernickle bread, and now I want croutons from Ruby Tuesdays. haha. It looks wonderful though!
I tried to describe the flavor in the post… it’s more of a regular bread texture, not too sweet, but a nice cocoa flavor. Not like a muffin. I love muffins though.
hmmm chocolate bread, does that taste like a muffin?
