Right now, all of my posts about food have the tag “food” whether or not I have included the recipe (or technique, as it sometimes is). If it has the recipe or technique, I also include “how-to” as a tag. But I also use “how-to” for tutorials like the jewelry storage board or recovering your office chair…
Basically, I need to devise a tagging system that will work better to help people find posts about a certain topic in the long run.
I was thinking I’d still use “food” but add “recipes,” get rid of “how-to” in favor of “tutorials,”… and then I realized that over time, I might get so many recipes posted that it will be hard to sift through them all. Should I tag differently, adding “pasta,” “chicken,” “pork,” “salad,” etc? I don’t want to have so many tags that they’re no longer useful either…
Should I add tags for different crafts? Right now I have “sewing” and “crafts” but should I add “paper” and “needlework/embroidery”?
Or should I try to make a page which catalogs all of the recipes by category? When I posted a new recipe, I’d also have to update that page, but it might be easier to keep up with than 50 tags. (Of course, I’d make a tutorial page with the tuts cataloged too.)
Does anyone have any input for me? I’d love to hear it before I try to take on this daunting task… Did you know I’ve written over 200 posts for Joyful Abode so far? AHH! Re-tagging will be a nightmare! But hopefully worth it.

I say the more tags the merrier. I’d consider keeping both ‘how-to’ and ‘tutorials’ if you’re wanting google to pick you up on both.
Go for the fewer tags. If someone needs to narrow down the results, they can always use the Search box. Plus, it’s easier to implement, which means you’re more likely to stick with it.
