Faux-ganoff Stroganoff Recipe

I don’t know what “real” stroganoff is, to tell the truth. I think it’s usually made with beef strips or chunks, not ground beef.

But I have to tell you, one of the things I remember loving as a kid was the stroganoff hamburger helper my dad would occasionally make, with an extra dollop of whipped cream on top.

But I don’t really have any desire to buy a box of hamburger helper… so I made my own version. Isn’t that funny? Homemade hamburger helper?

Faux-ganoff

I started browning about a pound of ground beef (extra lean) in a skillet. I sprinkled this liberally with Lawry’s Seasoned Salt and onion powder.

Meanwhile, I dumped a can of beef broth in a pot, filled the can with water, and dumped that in the pot. Then I dumped in some egg noodles… I didn’t want too much liquid to be left over when they were finished cooking, so I kind of crowded the pot.

Once the beef was cooked through, I glopped some cream of mushroom soup on top of it, and added a can of mushrooms (drained).

Then when the noodles were finished cooking, I poured the pot of noodles + broth mixture into the pan of beef.

Everything got stirred together really nicely, and three big glops of fat free sour cream and another stir later…

Faux-ganoff

Yum! Homemade fauxganoff. Super easy, pretty quick, and mighty good tasting.

I make this also, though I now skip the canned soup and make the sauce from scratch using cornstarch as a thickener. This meal is a great comfort food.

GS I hope you enjoy it!
Deb… that is gross. Why would people call people food dogfood? And WHY in God’s name would you eat this without sour cream? Sour cream embodies all that is good in the world! (Well, almost.)

Dh’s family ate something similar to this, minus the sour cream, and called it “dogfood”. He loved it. Me, not so much!
