No Taper Holders? No Problem!

No Taper Holders? No Problem!

Here’s how to make an easy, flexible taper holder.

  • Find a container that’s deep enough to offer some stability.
  • Pour in a few dried beans. Maybe 1/4 inch in the bottom of the container.
  • Stand up your taper candle in the center of the container, and hold upright while you pour more beans around it.
  • Adjust the candle so it’s standing up straight.

Beans = candle holder

Easy peasy! (Quite literally.) I like that dried legumes come in so many different colors, so you can adjust this method to your decor or an occasion. Black eyed peas and red tapers would probably be really good for Halloween. I liked this 15-bean soup mix. Lots of colors, sizes, and textures, and the split peas pick up the color of the taper candles perfectly.

(Or was it that the soup mix was sitting in my pantry for months and I was scared to try to make it, so I used it for this instead?)
I need some bean suggestions for bean beginners. I mean, I hate beans (all that I’ve tasted), but I want to like them. I need a way to ease in.

    I found a great bean salsa recipe (it's also called 'Southern Caviar') that is a big hit every time I make it. Even people who say they hate beans really love this. It's a very healthy and light bean dip. The only trouble with it is the recipe makes a huge batch so it's best to make it for a party or for people who really love it and can finish it in a few days. If you want the recipe, I can send it to you!

    You could make Hoppin John. Fry up Onions - lots - in a little bacon grease - with some chopped carrot and celery. Add a can of black eyed peas or field peas and a cup or two of cooked rice. I know you'd LOVE it. :-)
  • I love this! So cute! And I'm with you - I'd much rather use beans to hold up some candles than eat them. Beans, candle wax, what's the difference?? :)

    When you find some good bean recipes please pass them on to fellow bean haters. My husband will be a harder sell than I am!
  • Great idea! I'm going to have to try this.

    I hate beans too so I'm not help.
  • You need to like beans... do you like Baked Beans (good brown sugary ones, like Bush's?) How about refried beans in your Mexican food? A good spicy black bean dip? Those are great starters without making a meal out of it since you aren't sure. I don't have the recipes with me, but you can easily find one on the internet. Once you've tried a few of these, then you'll figure out what spices/food combinations will make YOU like beans, and then look for more recipes with those combinations.
