Tiny Green Bugs on my Pea Plants!

That’s the term I googled when I discovered them… aphids. Ugh.

See, I noticed the bottom leaves turning brown…

And at first I thought it was because they don’t get enough sunlight. Which… maybe they do, maybe they don’t, but it’s something I’m semi-concerned about. But when I looked closer I saw tiny green bugs on the leaves. This made me so sad, and a little angry… They were green because they were sucking out all my pea plant’s chlorophyll! NOT cool.

So I sprayed them with soap water and kept checking them for the next few days, and they seem to be gone… mostly if not completely. And the plant is producing peas, which is cool.

But I think there’s still a problem. See the leaves turning brown to the right of my hand here?

Does that look like aphid damage to you? I think it showed up afterward… could the soap be harming my plants somehow? Or do you recognize this as being some other sort of disease?

I loooove sugar snap peas and am totally looking forward to there being enough for a nice stir-fry or to blanch and add to salads or something. I just hope they don’t die first.

Soup huh? Never heard of that.

I want to snap that pea off the vine and eat it. Looks yummy.

I’ve been told that if a soap is too alkaline it can cause leaf damage and that we should let the water run on the ground (thereby avoiding getting the soapy water on the plant). I only planted my first (very tiny) garden this spring so please take my advice with caution. The folks at the nearest garden center/greenhouse should be able to help you!
