Zora and the Crate

Submitted by Joyful Abode on June 5, 2009 – 5:00 amView Comments

Zora doesn’t love her crate, but she’s fine with it. When it’s bedtime, I ask her, “Do you need to go outside or are you ready for bed?” Since she recognizes “outside” and “bed” she knows what I’m saying… and she either goes to the door to be let out or goes straight into her crate.

If she goes outside first, when she comes in after doing her business, I tell her, “OK go to bed,” and she runs over to her crate and climbs in.

But she’s never just hung out in her crate for fun.

And in the past she’s gotten upset if for any reason we needed to have her go in her crate during the day rather than at bedtime. So I figured it would be good to get her used to going into it sometimes during the day. Just because you never know what could happen and you might need your dog to go in the crate at some point… and it’s nicer if they don’t make a fuss.

So sometimes lately if I have a really good treat (like her heartworm medicine she looooooves) I will say “go to bed” to her… and she’s hesitant at first, but finally goes in. I close the door and give her the treat, and sit besider her for a few mintues before opening the door again, petting her and “good girl”ing her while she’s still in it, and then saying “okay” so she can come out.

She’s been fine with that.

So yesterday I told her to go into her crate to relax (she was heading toward the couch where she usually hangs out) and she actually stayed in there for about 20 minutes with the door open voluntarily. Then she came out, stretched, and walked over to me for a pat on the head.

And then? She went back in her crate! For another rest of about 5 more minutes.

Maybe she’s warming up to it… or maybe she just doesn’t think it’s too weird for daytime anymore.

Either way, it can’t be bad for her to be comfy with it during the day.

  • What a cutie! She looks like she's smiling. :o)
  • Don't you love it when your dog loves their crate? At our old apartment, we had the crate in the living room, so the dogs would go in there and rest when we were just hanging out at home. Now their crate is downstairs near the laundry room, so whenever I go downstairs to do some laundry, they'll go down there and chill in the crate while they wait for me. :)
  • We inherited a second hand dog rather spur of the moment and were not sure how house broke he was, if he would or would not eat my cats and how trustworthy he is, in general - so we got a crate the day he moved in and set it up in my workroom. Until we go to know him, when we left the house & overnight, he was crated. Amazingly, he behaves beautifully [for the most part] so he comes and goes from his "house" as he wishes [until he does something to deserve a bit of confinement].

He loves his house. It's HIS spot, and he feels safe in there. He prefers to sleep in his crate when he naps. In fact, he's in there now while I work in the office & type this out.

    He snores, too.

the other day i was looking for my dog, savana. i kept calling her name and she didn't come running. i thought she was upstairs, i checked, nope. then i remember my husband went outside 5 minutes ago, i was afraid she went out there with him and he didn't notice. i asked him and he said nope. i kept calling her name and she never came. i was scared. then for some reason i looked in her crate, and there she was! just chilling, hanging out! i was surprised she was in there hanging out and i next told her to go lay down!

she use to not like her crate either, but she has gotten use to it. i think she likes it because it is next to the patio door and it warms up her crate from the sun! she loves sunbathing!

If you need to crate her during the day, you should have a special crate toy for her. A very good option is a kong chew toy with kibble or peanut butter inside. That way, she associates day time crating with yummy treats. If you put the peanut butter in it, freeze it first for extra awesomeness. If she start whining, DO NOT let her out, because she will realize that if she makes enough fuss, she'll get let out.
