Proflowers Fruit Basket – Review

I was super-excited because today was the day I was to receive a free fruit basket from Proflowers to review. It arrived via FedEx at about 3:00pm and I hurried to open it.

Item Description:

  • 2 Green Comice or D’Anjou Pears
  • 2 Granny Smith Apples
  • 3 Gala Apples
  • 3 Navel Oranges
  • 2 Red Grapefruit
  • 8 Foil Wrapped Hard Candies
  • FREE 5.5 oz. Cheddar or Pepper Jack Cheese
  • FREE 2.2 oz. Carrs Water Crackers
  • FREE 5 oz. Summer Sausage

This is how it appears on the website:

And this is what it looked like when I took it out of its box.

And unwrapped. At first I was a little confused because I thought it was supposed to have more fruit than this… but what I didn’t realize was that there were 2 layers.

Good thing I didn’t just dump the “filler” packaging in the trash like I was about to! I lifted it and discovered more fruit hiding!

This is the “bounty” that’s included in the basket. Some apples, oranges, a couple pears, and a couple grapefruits. Unfortunately, the fruit is underwhelming. The grapefruits are both bruised and have cracks in the skin, and the oranges all look a little squished too (each one has at least one side that is “flattened.” Oh well, it’ll still taste fine I’m sure.

This is the “FREE 5.5 oz. Cheddar or Pepper Jack Cheese” that was supposed to be in the basket. Er… it’s less than 4 oz. and it’s not even cheese. It’s pasteurized process cheese food… fancy American cheese “product.” Definitely disappointing because I LOVE cheese (real cheese) and was excited about the cheddar or pepper jack (you don’t get to pick which one, but I like both).

Also, I love summer sausage so I was excited about that too, but… this one is full of sugar and “flavorings.” For some reason, I assumed a gourmet gift basket would have GOOD sausage in it (aka no corn syrup, and few/real ingredients). Again, oh well. (And there is nothing compelling about the candy. I haven’t even opened a piece because it looks like the cheapest candy offices and car dealerships buy by the barrel to put in their candy dishes for customers.)

It was definitely a fine thing to receive in the mail for free, but if I had purchased this for someone as a gift I would’ve been a bit embarrassed by the quality of the fruit, the “cheese” and sausage… not to mention a bit peeved that I had spent $40 plus shipping for mediocre-quality items.

I'm a fruit-lover too, and have been eating TONS of fruit since becoming pregnant. I guess living in California's central valley also has me spoiled (as to the quality of fruit).

I've heard ProFlowers is really good at flowers and plants though (from people who have sent and received)… maybe they should stick with that as their focus.

I'm sorry you had such a disappointing experience! We love fruit here and this looks like something I would have ordered for a friend. Thank you for sharing your take on the fruit basket!
