HALO Sleep Sack – Review and Giveaway

What Is It?

October is national SIDS awareness month, so I had the opportunity to review the HALO SleepSack Swaddle. It is a roomy sleep sack that you zip your baby into, with an optional swaddling band to wrap and velcro around the baby’s arms.

HALO wants you to know that putting babies to sleep on their backs can prevent SIDS. Your child’s sleeping area (wither a crib, bed, or cosleeper) should have a firm matress with a tight-fitting sheet, with no soft bedding or toys. Pacifiers can also help prevent SIDS (wait a month to introduce it, if you are breastfeeding) as does breastfeeding. Babies shouldn’t get too warm when they’re sleeping. 68-72 degrees are recommended. Also keep your baby away from secondhand cigarette smoke. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.

Every one of your child’s caregivers (mom, dad, grandparents, babysitters, daycare workers) needs to be aware of safest sleeping practices.

HALO is donating $1 to SIDS Awareness for each new fan to join their Facebook page during the month of October. You can also follow the company on twitter.

My Thoughts:

I promise you I’ll always be honest in my reviews. And here’s proof:

It’s okay. Just okay. First of all, there is a LOT of velcro on this sucker. Of course, the swaddle strip velcros around to hold your baby’s arms securely…with two giant strips of velcro.

IMG_3698

The back also has two giant strips of velcro to hold the swaddle strip in place. And the front has these two tabs (see below) of velcro to keep the strip from riding up and getting in your baby’s face. I understand the safety issues at hand, but since it’s not an expensive product, I’d prefer to cut down on the velcro and have the swaddle strip actually stitched in place… yes, you’d lose the versatility of being able to use it has a “wearable blanket” without the swaddle, but the whole thing would be much less…crunchy.

IMG_3699

Also, if you want to impress me with quality workmanship, loose threads aren’t the way to go.

IMG_3697

All that said, I did give it a fair try. I’ve used the SleepSack for several naps and several nights of sleeping. My baby girl can’t sleep without being swaddled because her arms fly around (strong Moro reflex!) and wake her up. So I used it with the velcro-y swaddler attached. It’s pretty easy to put on. There are arm holes like any other piece of clothing, then the whole bag zips down from the top (with a jacket zipper type thing) and then you wrap up your baby’s arms individually with the swaddle part.

IMG_3746

It seems pretty secure at first, but she can definitely wiggle her arms out. Sometimes they poke out of the bottom of the swaddle strip, and other times she’s managed to sneak a fist out of the top to suck on, then worm her entire arm out of the top. Now maybe this is because my girl is on the higher end of the weight/size limit for the swaddle, or maybe it’s just something you have to deal with. It’s not a huge deal either way – she wasn’t woken by it since it still held her arms still enough for preventing the Moro “startle.”

IMG_3882

I do really like the zip-open-from-the-bottom feature, because you can change diapers in the middle of the night without taking off the whole thing.

IMG_3748

Still, when we need to swaddle our daughter, my husband and I both found ourselves reaching for our favorite blankets (I should do a review of those later, shouldn’t I?), instead of reaching for the HALO SleepSack. We’re both really good at wrapping a tight swaddle though, and if you haven’t been able to master that, the SleepSack might be a step up.

HALO definitely has your baby’s safety in mind and this could be a really good tool for a lot of families.

I am HORRIBLE at swaddling Ella! She could always get out of my swaddles, no matter how good I thought it was. My husband, fortunately, is great at it. He would swaddle her in no time flat, and she would be comfy cozy the entire time she slept. Well, in my lack-of-sleep, hormones-going-nuts state, I decided that my swaddle skills reflected my ability to be a parent at all, and went about trying to swaddle every stuffed animal in the house. Amazing how well one can swaddle a teddy bear that isn’t wiggling. :-)

I have three children and swaddled my first two with just regular thin blankets but when my third cam i had friends loan me some of their swaddle blankets and fell in love with the ones that wrap around a couple times. my kids however can manage to wiggle their arms out no matter how well it is done by the time they are 2 months so i don’t fight and just swaddle them arms free.

I am horrible at swaddling lol. My daughter *always* wriggled her way out of my swaddles. Hubby was a little better, but DD always seemed to wake herself up anyway..

I only ever used blankets to swaddle with and as long as they were big enough they turned out okay. My son always slept really hot so our bigger problem was keeping clothes off him. To this day he will wake up sweating in the dead of winter!

Just something to add to your very awesome (and very thorough review)… One feature that seems very smart about this product is that the main part of the swaddle is focused on the arms and chest… it used to be practiced that swaddling was for the whole body, but not a lot of people (especially people who already have older children and have been doing it that way forever) know that doctors now recommend to only swaddle the upper half of the body and not the hips and legs because constricted hip and leg movement can lead to hip dysplasia in young infants… So it is pretty cool that the legs are free moving yet still “swaddled” because it is pretty difficult to manage a good tight swaddle that is tight on the upper half and still loose on the lower half of such a teeny tiny little target!!! Just my input: though I do have to admit I have never come in contact with the HALO product, though I may consider it or something similar for this next baby… Hope that was insightful to someone/anyone… :)

You’re definitely right about the hip thing. Like I said before, this would be a really good tool for someone who doesn’t know how to swaddle properly with a regular blanket, but if you do know how (when we swaddle Anneliese with a blanket, she has plenty of room to move her hips/legs as she wants to) it’s not any better than a good, lightweight, large blanket.

That look on her face in the picture of her legs/diaper sticking out KILLS me! hahaha, she’s like, “dude, this is some serious velcro.” It seriously doesn’t look all that comfy on her :( Anyway, neither of my kids ever liked being swaddled so I don’t need to win this. I just wanted to comment and say how cute/funny those pics were :D

The swaddling blankets were like a miracle for us. He still wakes himself up at night with those chubby little arms of his so we have to swaddle him. He doesn’t really like it so we have to swaddle after he is already asleep for the night…he hasn’t woken up yet. My hubby is good at that. I usually wake him while I am trying to wrap him.

Aw…I miss the day of the Moro reflex! This post really takes me back! Now, I’d love to win one for the next baby we are hoping to meet before too long!

I don’t have a specific story, but I will always remember how sweet my husband was when swaddling our son. He wanted one thing to be “his” thing since he couldn’t feed him, so he decided to become the ‘baby whisperer’ and learn to swaddle like a pro. He must have watched Dr. Harvey Karp’s 5 S’s a million times. We had to watch it in the hospital, and then he made me order it from Netflix!

Too cute. I can’t wait to do it gain someday! (and this would come in handy for times when daddy’s not around!)

My little one’s about the same age as yours, but he’s a tummy sleeper so don’t have a problem with the reflex thing waking him. All three of my kids were tummy sleepers, they refuse to sleep on their backs. This little one could roll from back to belly at a few weeks old he hated it so much. I’ve never swaddled any of them, I just never think of it, it would probably have helped… But then I think being on their tummy’s basically the same as being swaddled. I found a Halo sack at the local thrift store for a quarter! That was really cool, but it doesn’t have the swaddling part. Maybe I’ll actually think of swaddling with the next one, be interesting to see if it helps them in those insane first three months :)

Both of my kids were swaddled till they were 4-5 months old; I became a ninja at it! I could swaddle a screaming, writing baby in a McDonald’s napkin if I had too!

We used the Miracle Blanket though and it worked great at preventing them from getting their arms out and smacking themselves about the face.

It’s actually my 2-yo I’d love the sleep sack for – they make a toddler version(not swaddled, obv) and I am tempted to try it to keep him warm at night. Despite layers and fleece-feetied pajamas, he’s always cold and won’t keep blankets on.

I don’t have any babies yet and I don’t know anything much about babies but I’ve been enjoying going along with your blog because you give very in-depth information about the whole process. Highly educational.

Most of my friends have babies and I’ve never seen this swaddling business, so you can imagine my shock followed by amusement when I saw your sweet baby wrapped in what looked like a mini-straight jacket! I must say, the more I see, the less qualified I feel to handle this mothering business, but I’ll keep reading. Maybe it gets easier…

      aww thanks for the comment.

Don’t worry about it – every baby is seriously very different. I have friends w/babies who sleep unswaddled just fine.

Mine has a strong moro reflex, which is when they feel like they’re falling and their arms swing out to grab whatever they can (so if mama is carrying them, they grab mama). If they’re almost asleep, that reflex will startle them and wake them up… so swaddling keeps them feeling safe and “contained” like they were in the womb, and keeps their arms from flying around.

DH was the only one who could perfect the swaddle with the blankie from the hospital. DD would bust out of the ones I’d do almost instantly. Our neighbor introduced us to the swaddle blanket and we were instantly in love. I’m pretty sure we used the kiddopotamus ones as well and those little tabs didn’t do much once she got stronger too. Later on, we had a Halo Sleep Sack for the wearable blanket aspect and loved it. Now I can’t find but one of each and so would love to have one of their sleepsack swaddles with all of that extra velcro for #2!

We used the Kiddapotamus swaddles with the velcro tabs (just two little tabs so not a lot of “crunch”) when she got strong enough to kick completely out of the tightest blanket swaddle (around 3-4 months). Now, we just use the sleep sacks with no swaddle part – just the wearable blanket. She loves them and usually rolls over to sleep on her tummy anyway. She likes to tuck her hands either under her head or under her chest when she sleeps.

    It’s frickin adorable.
