Tom’s of Maine Wicked Fresh–Review and $50 Giveaway

This post brought to you by Tom’s of Maine. All opinions are 100% mine.

What Is It?

Tom’s of Maine came out with two new natural dental care products recently – Wicked Fresh toothpaste, and Wicked Fresh mouthwash (which is supposed to get your mouth super-fresh cleaning without the burn of other mouthwashes).

My Thoughts:

Let’s talk about the toothpaste first. I like toothpaste. At one point in my life, I was brushing my teeth basically every time I went to the bathroom… I’d pee, wash my hands, then brush my teeth, and come out feeling totally fresh and new. Then the dentist told me I had to cut back because I was too aggressive with the tooth-brushing thing and my gums were being pushed back. Gross. Opposite effect of what I wanted.

I also like baking-soda based toothpastes because they make me feel so CLEAN… but many of them are too bitter or salty tasting, and leave me wanting to chew some minty gum, plus wanting to drink 2 glasses of water because I’m so thirsty.

Tom’s of Maine Wicked Fresh toothpaste is a nice balance. It has a baking-soda-clean feeling, but not the bitterness that goes along with it (it’s sweetened with xylitol), and a very minty taste. Like mint, not like candy. The first few times I used it I noticed a licorice aftertaste which I hated … but I must’ve gotten used to it because I don’t notice anymore. And I really like the toothpaste. Yum.

Cons? Well, if you’re buying Tom’s it’s likely you want a more natural product. I know a lot of people looking for that are NOT in love with sodium lauryl sulfate (the stuff that makes it “lather”) or glycerin. Not 100% sure why you folks hate those ingredients – please, someone tell me. It also has fluoride, which you folks don’t like. I think it’s probably fine as long as you’re not eating it from the tube.

Another con is the metal tube. While kitchsy and fun, if you don’t know how to use it, it can blow up in your face – almost literally. With metal tubes, you really do have to squeeze from the bottom up (or risk trapping some toothpaste that will be rendered unusable), BUT if you squeeze with the cap still on to push the toothpaste up, then remove the cap, it’ll spew uncontrollably for a while. It’s ridiculous. And it reminded me of when Ramona got all mad and squeezed all the toothpaste out from the middle of the tube in a fit of rage.

IMG_5868

The mouthwash… neither one of us feels the mouthwash is minty enough to feel “wicked fresh”, you know? but it IS pretty… like snow or something, all pearly. I think by taking out the “burn” they removed some of the freshness. And there isn’t enough mint to compensate. My husband said, “It probably does get your mouth fresh, but it doesn’t FEEL or taste fresh.” Tom’s of Maine, back to the drawing board on this one, please!

My favorite “wicked fresh” moment would have to be diving into the cool water and stripping down after running in Warrior Dash. It felt SOOOO good to get all that muddy grime off! :)

Wow – sweet giveaway! My “wicked fresh” moment was finally brushing my teeth after the Ragnar Great River relay! ~200ish mile relay over the course of 24 hours… Power bars, Powerade, shot blocks. Your teeth are practically furry after all that – brushing my teeth never felt so good!

I don’t think I’ve ever had a wicked fresh moment in my life. I always have something that feels dingy…haha. It is a nice feeling when you brush you teeth first thing in the morning though. I’ve never tried Tom’s, so I’d pick some up if I won!

My most wicked fresh moment was when I was electrocuted. I had a near death experience, and it has confirmed my belief in the afterlife. I no longer sweat the small stuff.

Wicked fresh? Its a tie between the shower after a long camping trip, or after having my daughter. Either one were probably the best showers I’ve ever taken.

I’m sorry it took me so long to give an explanation. It is just that when Procter and Gamble bought the Natura dog-food company, I learned that they could change the ingredients of the product and don’t have tell the consumer for at least 6 months, maybe more. This is something that most people don’t realize and I wonder if it happens with ALL products, not just dog food. If this is the case, that would explain these comments from Toms formerly loyal customers:
        http://www.tomsofmaine.com/blog/blog-detail/our-new-look

I would hate to have you backing a product and thinking that it is the all-natural product it has always been.

oh thanks for the details. I didn’t know they had changed hands. Still though, in my review here I mentioned that
“Well, if you’re buying Tom’s it’s likely you want a more natural product. I know a lot of people looking for that are NOT in love with sodium lauryl sulfate (the stuff that makes it “lather”) or glycerin. I definitely checked out the ingredients. :) It doesn’t bother me since I’m used to using colgate or crest or whatever is on sale… but can see that it’s not really the “crunchiest” toothpaste in existence either.

One especially hot summer evening after working in the garden until dark I found my teenage children had accidentally locked me out of the house. Knowing my husband would be returning home within an hour or so and would “rescue me” I promptly peeled off my clothes, slipped into the nice warm swimming pool, and “wickedly fresh skinny dipped!!!”

my wicked fresh moment was taking a proper hot shower after returning from spending two weeks in Ghana. while we were there the temps were regularly over 110 in the midday, got down to a chilly 80F at night and we had only intermittent access to low-pressure cold showers.

As a California born and bred gal, I have to sort of guess what “wicked fresh” is, but I’m going to generally say it means pretty awesome. Which, for me was this weekend when I summoned up the courage to sing back up in a friends band to a room full of people including close friends. Yay, me!

I’m actually allergic to fluoride! I use Tom’s of Maine’s fluoride-free toothpastes all the time (spearmint is my fav), not for the natural ingredients, but because all the other fluoride-free toothpastes I’ve tried taste terrible, or don’t leave me with that “wicked clean” feeling.

I’m going to interpret “wicked fresh” as “young and fun, and the teensiest bit lawbreaking”. :)

When I was a junior in college, we got a fabulous snowfall. My friend, Nate, was an RA in one of the dorms. Around midnight, he called me up to tell me that he’d “borrowed” (we really did return them!) some trays from dining service, and we could use them as sleds down our campus’ one hill. We went sledding at midnight on borrowed food service trays, and it was SO much fun! We were both completely soaked and frozen when we finished up, and went to have refreshing hot chocolate and popcorn at my apartment when we were finished. So fun!
