This is a sponsored post from BlogHer and Tropicana.

You’ve heard about “waking up on the wrong side of the bed,” right? Some days, that happens. But often, you can get out of that morning funk if you make a conscious effort to start the day off with GOOD. Here are some little things I do to make sure my day gets off to the right start:

  1. Stay in bed.

No, not all day. But I love waking up and snuggling with my little girl for a while before we start the day. Tickling her, singing songs and reciting nursery rhymes, snuggling and nursing… it’s hard to be in a bad mood with a giggling baby in your bed. Even if you have no baby in your bed, spend 10 or 20 minutes in bed before rising. Stretch really well. Read a chapter in your book. Turn on your iPod and listen to your new favorite song. Relish the softness of your bed.

  2. Shower and get dressed ASAP.

Many days lately, Anneliese is in a GREAT mood in the early morning, which means she’s able to entertain herself for a little while without needing me. If I can hop in the shower, wash my hair, shave my legs, and get dressed in REAL clothes (You know what I’m talking about, mamas. Pants that zip. No elastic.), I tend to feel better about myself for the rest of the day and accomplish more, too.

  3. Start with a great breakfast.

I’m not typically a breakfast person. Don’t get me wrong – I love breakfast foods. It’s just that I don’t wake up ravenous, and often get sidetracked doing other things until I get hungry, look at the clock, and realize it’s already 11:30. HOWEVER, I’ve found that if I eat a really good breakfast within an hour or so of waking, I’m more likely to stay on track nutritionally the rest of the day. I’m less tempted to have (grain free) cookies and coffee for lunch, and more likely to have a big salad with veggies and meat in it. What’s a great breakfast, to me? A few strips of bacon and an egg or two cooked in the bacon grease is a classic. Tons of protein and good, energy-dense fats, which serves to provide lots of fuel for my day and keeps me full for a long time.

  4. Have a plan for the day.

I don’t mean a super-ambitious plan with 15 must-dos. I just mean having a couple of overreaching goals for the day. That might mean seeing a friend in person (any friend, any activity, just to get adult face-time), working on a craft (crocheting half a hat, or cutting out pieces for a baby dress), improving the house (hanging up 4 pictures on the wall, doing a load of laundry, or dusting the shelves), or even just making sure to recharge (going for a walk, or watching a favorite movie). Having a realistic goal for the day early on makes it much more likely that I’ll accomplish that goal. Then, at the end of the day, I’m not left to wonder “Where did the day go?”

  5. Get some sun.

Early in the morning, stepping outside for 10 minutes or even throwing open the curtains to brighten the room is a great way to start the day. Not only does real sunlight welcome a cheerful feeling, but it also re-sets your circadian rhythm, making it easier to FEEL awake, and easier to go to sleep later.

Tropicana can help put the good in your mornings, if you’re a fan of juice. Each 8 ounce glass has lots of vitamin C, and a good amount of Potassium and Folic Acid. Also, it tastes good if you don’t drink it right after brushing your teeth (toothpaste and orange juice are a deadly combination).

You could win a $100 Visa gift card! Tell me how YOU put the “Good” in your mornings! Is there something special you do each morning, to ensure an awesome day?

First, that baby is adorable. I am free for babysitting.

It’s not as easy to cuddle a high school senior, even if you gently remind him he was once breastfed. Or maybe especially if you remind him he was once breastfed. So in the mornings I cuddle with the little doggie, who is quite happy to be held and loved. Also, he never asks for lunch money. Which, trust me, is nice.

I like to wake up on my own terms. So I ease myself into the day with a doggie cuddle and some peace and quiet. Then, if I’m feeling ambitious, I make waffles to have with my orange juice.

I start my morning with a cup of coffee and the morning newspaper. I allow extra time to find out what’s going on in the world!

Hot cup of coffee and dark chocolate.

i love to lie in my bed for an extra 15 minutes after waking up. This is always the time my cat curls up on me as well….so we snuggle and enjoy waking up without the rush of being late. (I set my alarm extra early to allow ample kitten snuggle time) :)

I always started the day with some kind of juice, oatmeal and a big kiss before they would leave for school. Them days are long gone.

I tend to try to get all my “homemaking” tasks done first thing so I can devote the rest of my day to fun things (or nothing lol). That makes it a good day for me.

Jeff (11 comments)

I usually make some eggs with english muffins. A cup of O.J. is good too.

I am not a morning person. However, I am lucky enough to be married to one. My husband wakes me every morning with a cup of coffee. While I drag myself out of bed, he makes breakfast: oatmeal & OJ, during the week and pancakes on the weekend. My husband definitely puts the “good” in my morning.

I start my day by sitting in solitude with a cup of strong, hot coffee. I reflect on my many blessings and get excited for what lies ahead. I don’t drink a glass of orange juice until much later in the morning. Just bought more Tropicana yesterday. Thanks for the giveaway.

How I put the good in my morning. After a nice hot cup of coffee. I will take out my favorite juice which is Tropicana orange juice in the travel size bottles and a piece of whole wheat toast. I am out of the door then and I also take another bottle of juice with me for work.

In-bed baby snuggles are the best. Sweet morning nursing with breaks for smiles. We’re at a phase now where I can sit Sebastian up against my body and doze back to sleep for an extra 10-15 while he plays with Sophie in bed. Bliss. The same goes for showers here too – Getting one in right when he wakes is the best time to actually score a full shower. You know, the kind where Baby doesn’t start wailing before I can get to shaving my second leg.

You would THINK that yoga pants and other comfy clothes would make you more productive (easier to move around in, etc) but it really doesn’t work that way. Even if I take a whole hour to get done up for the day (shower, hair, makeup, clothes), I end up so much more productive that it totally makes up for that extra time.

Maria (14 comments)

The good in my morning comes from seeing my son’s face as he drinks his oj, with pulp. It’s priceless.

This may sound kooky, but I drink tea and read a poem. I’m selective on poetry, so sometimes this is hit or miss. But the right poem makes my heart whirl all day long. I’m currently working my way through a Wendell Berry book. Something about his words, and all the morning sunlight filling up the windows, and tea … it makes me happy. All my senses wake up :)

I love this post just because. :) Mornings are hard for me sometimes, but only when I don’t try to get enough sleep. If I get enough sleep, I am a super morning person, but also a night owl. I can’t decide!

Oh, right, contest. Let’s see. I definitely feel weird if my husband doesn’t kiss me before he goes off for work. (Sometimes I sleep in.) Sets my whole morning off right!
