So Rachael Ray makes dog food now.

I thought it was a joke at first but it’s not. She really does. And the name “Nutrish”… I can just hear her saying it in my head. Yum-o, right?

Well, I gave Zora the chance to taste Rachael Ray Nutrish just 6 dry dog food (click to get your own sample or a coupon) along with her regular food. Who knows what she was thinking, but she sure seemed to like it!

You’ll notice in the video I say that my dog’s current food is grain free (Canidae) and that’s because I don’t really see any point in a carnivorous dog having a diet filled with corn, wheat, rice, or other grains (or soy). It doesn’t hurt her to eat those things now and then, but dogs really don’t need that stuff. (Is it a surprise that my dog has a grain-free diet? Probably not, since I try not to eat grains either.)

Nutrish is better than many other dog foods in that it doesn’t have wheat or corn, and the first ingredient is meat, but the lamb and brown rice food Zora got to try has… well… rice. So I doubt I’ll buy the food for her in the future, but might possibly buy the treats if I have a coupon or something. Because yeah, she really liked it!

Also, if your dog has issues with allergies, this would be a great food to try. Soy, wheat, and corn are huge allergens, but rice is pretty benign.

I’m surprised to see you feed kibbles, wether it’s grain free or not. I surely wouldn’t eat kibbles-like stuff as a human (100% nutrition in one little ball, really?) – so same thinking for my dogs.

You mention dogs are carnivorous, why not go straight to raw meat and veggies?

I actually did for a while, and occasionally still do, feed my dog raw meat. However, there’s a delicate balance between meat/fat/bone that needs to be maintained, otherwise she would have runny poo… plus sometimes we would forget to get the meat ready for the week and it would be frozen vs. thawed in the fridge… etc. It became necessary to have a kibble backup, and between moving, travel, caring for a new baby, etc, kibble was easier. And the kind we buy for her is I think the best. :)
Still, if I’m roasting a chicken, she gets the organs, or when I trim roasts or whatnot, she gets the cut-off parts. She also gets veggie bits as I’m cooking.
