Barefoot and Pregnant in the Kitchen–Weeks 21-22

Just the Facts:

Weeks pregnant: 22 weeks

Weight: 146? I don’t know. I was 142 yesterday, but 146 this morning. It was insane. And might have had something to do with the 2.5 glasses of water, glass of chocolate milk, and 2 (individual) bottles of coconut water I had in the 3 hours before bed the night before.

Gain: +7? +11? Hoo boy…

Size of the baby: almost a foot long (head to foot)

Weight: around a pound!

Other pregnancy related crap:

Emotional crap: Now that I know there’s a little Joey inside of me, I’m picturing big-sister-little-brother stuff, and whenever we are around littler boys I get so flustery seeing Anneliese playing with them. Today we got to play with a 6 month little boy, and Anneliese was petting his hair and trying to hug him at one point, and saying “baby” to him. She was so sweet. I love it.

Physical crap: Still not much in the way of feeling him move. Sometimes I feel him pushing a little stronger against his “walls” but he is mostly relaxed. SO different than how Anneliese was. It makes me really wonder what he’ll be like on the outside.

What I want to devour: Peanut butter. Cold vegetables. Farm fresh tomatoes, peanut butter, apples, cottage cheese, salad…. and conversely? fried foods, french fries… which I’m limiting pretty well but still having some of. Definitely feeling better about food even if I’m not eating as much meat as I’d like.

What makes me want to hurl: having trouble (again? still?) with meat that I’ve cooked myself. I’m glad to be cooking meat for Anneliese again (and she probably is too) but I don’t want it. I ate some eggs a week or two ago, but now the idea of eating them makes me queasy again.

Supplements: Prenatal vitamin, calcium that has a little bit of Vitamin D in it. Vitamin D3, Fish Oil.

Activity/Training: A bit more, and more babywearing which means I have 20+ pounds on my back. It’s nice that it’s not hot anymore. (This picture is from our 2 hour walk around a shopping center for errands/shopping and just walking too… she slept for about an hour at least, on my back in the Boba 3G )

Birth prep: OB appointment last week, just a checkup. Nothing really happened. Then this week, I had an appointment with my midwives. Yup, I got to meet the second one, and she is super sweet. I’m excited about my birth TEAM (husband, doula, midwives) and I can’t wait until we can all get together. My doula has worked with my midwife before, and my husband with my doula, but not everyone together.

I also watched Orgasmic Birth, or tried (the DVD from netflix was skippy, so I missed a lot) which I didn’t feel was SUPER-awesome. I thought it was too “out there” for most people, and for “birth junkies” there really wasn’t any new information. I still wish it hadn’t skipped as much as it did, but I’m not sure I’ll rent it again in order to see the parts I missed.

I watched Pregnant in America too, which I enjoyed more, but the dad who made it really seemed to feel strongly AGAINST hospitals and most doctors, instead of just presenting information and statistics along with his and his wife’s story. It was really enjoyable though, and there were a lot of mothers who shared their stories – some positive, some that made me cry for them. I really liked the parts where the film showed/discussed maternity care in other countries and how hugely different it is than here.

Anything I see or read though, I take with a grain of salt, and analyze myself, so I don’t mind so much when someone has an “agenda” and infuses their viewpoint into what they do… it’s life.

Baby prep: nada. I looked at some baby boy outfits at the NEX, but didn’t buy anything. The first thing I really want to find/get for him is some nice sleep gowns (for easy diaper changes).

Tandem nursing / BOOBS:

My nipples feel like someone has rubbed sandpaper on them … SUPER SENSITIVE right now. Like even my clothing touching them hurts. In the shower, the water hitting them hurts. So nursing always makes me hold my breath at the start, but it gets better after the initial latch. Anneliese is still cutting her molars, and she has wanted to nurse quite a bit lately. She’s even fallen asleep nursing in the living room a few times the last couple of weeks, which is something she really hasn’t done much lately.

She still nurses more in the morning, and some throughout the day, but not much before bed. I don’t know if it’s because she doesn’t want to or mostly because I don’t want her to. By night I’m “touched out” and needing time to myself, so I encourage her to finish up and get to bed. Thankfully she has no problem with it.

Lately (at bedtime) I’ve been telling her, “I’m going to count back from 10 and then you can go night night on your bed.” Then I start counting “10…9…8…” and sometimes she nurses all the way down to 1, then unlatches and rolls off of me onto her bed. Other times like tonight, she’s just ready to sleep. Tonight she unlatched at 9, took her pacifier, and rolled onto her bed at 7. I tucked her in with her blanket, kissed her, told her I loved her, and left. Bedtime is usually this easy, which I am very thankful for. She’s been sleeping through the night consistently again, which is great and my breasts definitely appreciate it.

Other stuff:

21 weeks, a week ago today. How big I look really depends on what I wear at this point. But I love that I actually look pregnant!
