Barefoot and Pregnant in the Kitchen–Week 24

Just the Facts:

Weeks pregnant: 24 weeks 1 day

Weight: 146-149, fluctuating.

Gain: +11-14 so far

Size of the baby: a foot long!

Weight: 1.3 pounds

Other pregnancy related crap:

Emotional crap: Is it just me or does it seem like this baby is coming SOON? I mean, a few months, but that’s SOON. I’m enjoying my time with Anneliese, and looking forward to 2-kid-dom, looking forward to the birth, feeling centered, and doing a bit of nesting mostly in the form of decluttering. It’s lovely. The 2nd trimester loveliness of not being super-uncomfortable all the time, and being excited.

Physical crap: Some reflux, some headaches, but mostly I’m good. I pee a hundred times a day. The toilet paper use in this house is ridiculous right now.

What I want to devour: The potatoes and eggs seem like a good idea still, so I bought some more potatoes to make home-fries with again… I’ll be doing that this week. Also salads. Big ones full of awesome stuff.

What makes me want to hurl: I still don’t want to cook and eat meat. Like, at all. But I did buy a rotisserie chicken and use the meat in a recipe (which I’ll post soon) and was able to eat that (and enjoy it). Which doesn’t normally happen. Normally I just eat the skin and Anneliese eats the chicken all week.

Supplements: Prenatal vitamin, calcium that has a little bit of Vitamin D in it. Vitamin D3, Fish Oil. Now sometimes Papaya enzyme chewables for reflux.

Activity/Training: just being more active in general still, trying to focus on deep squats… I squat while chugging water at the water cooler, while brushing my teeth, etc. I stretch on the floor a lot.

Birth prep: I just watched Orgasmic Birth again, with a new disk from Netflix. MUCH better without all the skipping which made it really disjointed last time… I still think it’s “for birth junkies” though and most people would be put off by the way some things are presented. But I liked it this time.

Baby prep: I bought some sleep gowns for Joey! 4 in size 0-3m, new from eBay (which haven’t come yet), 4 in 3-6m from Old Navy on sale and with a coupon, and 2 in 6-12m (hard to find!) from Gap also with a sale and coupon. They are SUPER cute and I can’t wait to snuggle him in them.

Tandem nursing / BOOBS:

I think less nursing this week… she still wants to nurse, but the duration is shorter in general (except this morning was a marathon snuggle-nurse).

Today for the first time, I was putting her down for a nap, sat on her bed, and asked, “Do you want to nurse?” She said “no.” and lay on her bed. Then she crawled over to me and put her head on my leg for a bit just to be close. After a couple minutes, she told me she had to go potty, and after she pottied, she did want to nurse, but it was the first time she told me no before a nap or bed (though, like I said, she did end up changing her mind). It kind of caught me off guard but shouldn’t have because she doesn’t really nurse to sleep anymore. Just a few seconds before rolling over onto her bed.

Maybe related – yesterday I discovered this had happened. The night before, it was totally intact and normal. So this either happened at night or during a nap yesterday.

MAJOR chewing/teething going on… and a pacifier isn’t a teething toy. It’s meant for sucking. Obviously. So it went in the trash. And I didn’t put another one in her bed. And she has done fine. She normally only sucks on her paci for a few minutes while she is falling asleep, and after that it’s abandoned in her bed. So I had thought about taking it away earlier but figured since it wasn’t hurting anything, I’d let her keep it a bit longer. But this told me she is pretty much done with it. So that’s that. She still has one in the car, but hardly ever uses it. I’m sure it’ll go away pretty soon too.

Sometimes when nursing her, I’ll put her baby doll on my other breast like it is nursing, and at first she DID NOT LIKE that. She would pry the baby’s face off of me, and switch sides to take over the side the doll was on. But in just a few days, she has decided maybe it’s okay to share, and sometimes she will bring her doll to me to nurse (she puts the doll’s face on my breast). It’s super cute and yesterday she and the doll were “tandem nursing” and she was kind of looking at it a little funny, but was totally okay with it.

Other stuff:

BELLEH. Also, like my new boots??? I’m in love with them and if I didn’t want to be cremated I might want to be buried in them. I’ve never bought any item of clothing that costs this much before in my life. But I already know they are worth it. I’ve been looking for The Boots for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried on so many pairs, bought a couple and ended up feeling “meh” about them… but these are The Ones.

They are perfect for my narrow calves, unlike most boots that look ridiculously huge and emphasize “toothpick calves!!” The toes are roomy but don’t look stupid, so my feet are comfy, and they didn’t need to be broken in at all..they’re soft and perfect right away. I’m sure I’ll write more about my love affair with them another time. But I’ll tell you now, it is very very hot. Rawr.

While trying to get my baby in the best position for birth (he or she is facing out, not posterior) i discovered the website spinningbabies.com. — lots of interesting stuff. additionally, my midwives advised against deep squats. while they may help open the pelvis, they discourage baby from being in the best position for birth. just thought i would pass on what i have been learning.

I know that this isn’t related to your post AT ALL, but how are your gDiapers holding up? Are they still absorbing well? I’m asking because Anneliese is older now, and I’m not sure how absorbent they really are! We use prefolds with covers here and they just aren’t cutting now that I have a 14 month old. I was thinking about getting some gDiapers.

The gDiapers are great. I stripped the cloth really well about a month ago i think… boiled on the stove. It’s the only time I’ve done that in 16 months so they needed it! BUT for nighttime even 2 gCloth isn’t really enough especially since she often sleeps 13 hours… and wets a LOT at night. But we’ve been using a gRefill at night instead (their flushable option) and it holds a lot so night leaks don’t happen as often with those. The gCloth are perfect during the day though.

Perfect boots are the BEST. I’m on year 4 with a pair of black boots, I think they’ve already been re-heeled twice…they were expensive though so I’ll keep fixing them until I wear through the leather!

Also, I had a hard time with sleep gowns. They were so hard to get all the way over Clara’s head and she hated them! Maybe she’s got a bigger head than I thought.
