Joey’s First Foods

Joey has been 6 months old for just over a week now, and I wanted to share the things that he’s been tasting.

Really not much eating happening, but lots of tasting.

Anneliese’s first food was egg yolks, from local “happy chickens,” mashed with olive oil and a little sea salt.

Joey’s was the same, but without the salt, and with a little bit of water to thin it slightly.

Since he’s just-barely 6 months, not almost-7 like Anneliese was, he isn’t as coordinated with a spoon, and I helped him get some in his mouth. He seemed to enjoy it, though his tongue thrust is still very strong at this point so most of it came right back out.

After a bit, we gave up on the spoon and I just used my finger. He liked that a little bit better.

I’m doing a mixture of some spoon-feeding, and some baby-led weaning solids. Mostly baby-led weaning.

He had some sweet potato, mushed up with coconut oil…and a different day, with butter. He has tried bananas, both BLW-style and mashed, and has tasted avocado too.

One night, we had turkey burgers and zucchini, so I made him his own little burger, and cut the zucchini into strips instead of rounds, to make it easier for him to hold them.

In this picture, he’s a little bummed out because he dropped his zucchini in his lap. Then he tried to taste his burger, and accidentally threw it onto the floor, where it was eaten quickly by a very happy dog.

The zucchini proved to be a little slippery for him for the most part, so I held some and let him lead my hand to his mouth to gnaw on it. He actually ate some of the zucchini and really seemed to enjoy it.

Anneliese thinks it’s cool that Joey is trying food now, and wants to get in on the action. Here she’s helping him use his “taster” (a silicone feeder – since the mesh “bag” ones get so nasty) to try some watermelon. She was very gentle.

Joey seems really excited to be at the table, even when he isn’t eating. It’s up high and he can see a lot! Plus his sister talks to him and laughs with him… What could be more fun than that?

Our current arrangement is this – Joey in the Svan high chair, and Anneliese in this sweet non-ugly booster seat. Right now it’s on a towel over the cushion, but I have some vinyl to cover the cushion with so that crumbs and food can just be wiped off.

Oh, and this face? I had to save it for last, because you guys…

Joey says, “WTF is a muffin?? OMGZ.” He tasted it a little, but mostly squished it in his hands and made faces at it.

Oh my goodness! These pictures are just adorable. I’ve been following you on Instagram for maybe 3 months now and I just found your youtube channel. It’s amazing how much Joey and Anneliese looked alike when they were about that same age; it’s easier to compare them when Anneliese had less hair I guess, haha! Anyhow, I love your blog and seeing their cute little faces on my feed :) .

I absolutely LOVE his face in that last picture!

  3. So glad to see how healthy Joey looks. Haven’t gotten caught up with your blog for about two months, so he has really changed. When I first saw his picture, I was startled to see how thin he was. I hope it was the small surgery in his mouth that helped with his sucking and helped him with his normal weight gain. I’m a grandmother, so have been on your blog since Annelise was born, enjoying all things new and different in child raising. Keep up te good job with Joey. P.S. I have a Joey grandson!!

Rooney’s first food was egg yolk, too. I couldn’t quite get it to the consistency I was wanting. Any tips?

  7. That is a cute booster!

    • Isn’t it? It’s hard to find things that look good in a real house sometimes. haha. I don’t want my house to look like a jungle-themed daycare or something. Glad i found this!
