Earlier this year, I joined this campaign by Mary Kay and still use the lipstick (a shade I wouldn’t have picked up on my own) nearly daily, so I figured maybe I would find something else amazing this time too.
Here’s what was in my box:
Mary KayÆ Compact Mini
This little compact is a really neat idea. It’s magnetic, so you can easily pop in and out different eyeshadows and blush, and when one runs out you can replace it with a refill instead of having to replace the whole thing. Instead of buying sets where you only like a couple of the colors (but there’s always one color you’ll never ever ever use), you get to make your own custom color combos. It has a secret door underneath to hold travel applicators, but if you’re at home you’ll probably want to use better brushes.
Mary KayÆ Mineral Eye Color in Golden Vanilla, Truffle, Lavender Fog, Midnight Star, Sweet Plum and Black Pearl
I don’t use a lot of eye makeup. Partly because I never really played with it so I’m pretty novice at it, and partly (also the reason I never played much with it) because it always irritates/ed my eyes. This mineral eye color didn’t irritate my skin at all, so it will be fun to play more with. I tried the golden vanilla, lavender fog, and sweet plum, which came pre-loaded into my compact mini.
What little I “know” (I use the term loosely) about eye makeup says that purples make greenish eyes look more green. Considering I got comments like, “That eye makeup really makes your brown eyes pop.” I’m not sure how true that is. HA! But the colors and the shading gave a nice subtle definition to my eyes.
Mary KayÆ Mineral Cheek Color in Shy Blush
This blush also came pre-loaded into my compact. It’s a nice rosy color without being too Barbie and would probably look good on most skin tones. It didn’t feel like anything at all, so I didn’t mind it on my skin. I have only used mineral blushes for years and years, so I’m not even sure what a regular blush feels like anymore.
(I know you probably can’t really tell but this is a before/after with the eye makeup, blush, and lip gloss… Apparently I like things really subtle. I feel like it makes a difference though.)
Mary KayÆ Ultimate Mascaraô in Black
Mascara often bothers me and makes my eyes a bit itchy by the end of the day, so I only wanted to try one of the three Mary Kay sent to me. I picked this one to see what “Ultimate” would look like on me. It was really easy to apply and the brush left NO clumps or stuck-together lashes to sort out, which was nice. However, by the end of the day, my lash line was feeling a bit irritated.
I would use this if I were going to an event or taking pictures just for a couple of hours, and then wash it off, but I probably wouldn’t use it for all-day.
Mary KayÆ Lash Loveô Mascara in Black
I probably should have tried this mascara instead, I think this one would be gentler.
Mary KayÆ Lash Loveô Waterproof Mascara in Black
I wasn’t planning on crying, sweating excessively or swimming, so I skipped this one for now.
Mary KayÆ NouriShine Plusô Lip Gloss in Mango Tango, Rock ëní Red and CafÈ Au Lait
These glosses are good for your lips, but what is more important to me is the color and how they feel. The colors of these look really bold in the package, but I tried all three and they’re totally wearable. They do feel a little sticky though, but not as annoyingly sticky as other glosses I’ve tried. They don’t last as long as lipstick on their own, so I would apply over a tint or lipstick, and be prepared to reapply every few hours while I’m out and about.
Mary KayÆ Lash Primer
I tried this, along with the Ultimateô Mascara above. It has a really nifty brush, and I’m not positive about the difference it made, but the combo of the two looked good.
TimeWiseÆ Microdermabrasion Set
I tried this with my last Mary Kay review, and got some of the exfoliating stuff in my eyes. It did not feel good when that happened. My skin felt really soft afterward, but it wasn’t worth the hazard of getting it in my eyes again (I have really bad luck with this… including flinging homemade laundry detergent into my eyes while I stirred it, and getting some shampoo I reviewed a different time into my eyes, too.) If you’re less clumsy about your eyes, you’ll probably like this.
If you’re like me, steer clear.
I enjoyed getting the chance to try out these items, and will definitely be using the eyeshadows, blushes and lip glosses more. If the Lash Loveô Mascara doesn’t irritate me, it would be fun to wear it more regularly, because I do like the way mascara makes my eyes pop a little bit more.
