New Spam Blocker: Testing

posted in Web/Blog |

Lately, I’ve been getting dozens of spam-comments a day here at Joyful Abode. It’s pretty irritating to say the least.

I just downloaded and installed the “Did you pass math?” plugin for wordpress, but I’m not sure if it’s working. Can you please help me test it by making a comment in this entry? Thanks!

If you liked this article, please share it on del.icio.us, StumbleUpon or Digg. I’d really appreciate it.

Heh, math! Did you enable the spam filter killer thing that wordpress is automatically equipped with, too? That seems to have helped me avoid spam on my wordpress blogs.

Yes, that’s activated too. Some gets through anyway. :(
    Did it work?

If you put in the wrong number, it won’t let you put the comment. :)

Hooray for not having one of those irritating “type the characters you see above that we have made helpfully illegible” spam blockers! I like this one much better. : )

Super Laura! Thanks for trying the wrong answer thing.

YAY Wendy and Mrs. Dragon. Yes, I HATE those illegible type things…. I could’ve put in a word thing in which I could make up my own words like “apron” “cookies” “pasta” “decorate” etc… but I like math!

    Hello Joyful Abode!
Another test comment, and new commenter here. I’ve been reading your adventures for a while now and I’m fascinated by all the cool cooking, sewing, and domestic tips. Thanks for helping me be a little more organized!

    Baker’s Dozen?

Yep, 13 didn’t work for six and six.

It’d be more cool if one of the numbers was spelled out.

I didn’t answer it and got the ANSWER THE QUESTION remark. You should be more stern with that message.

Thanks for trying it out Doug. It would be pretty neat to have one spelled out, but if it stops spam, that’s all I’m asking for!

Dovey, that’s awesome! I didn’t write (or look at) the code, so I didn’t know that was there. So great.

Hahahaha, did you change it to say “Sorry, it seems you didn’t pass math!!”?? Hilarious! *huuugs*

no joy i did not change it. it said that already! awesome code if you ask me. :) Seems to work for normal people. Let’s hope it stops the spammers/bots!

    Glad you like it, EmmaH!

Jessica, did you have to do a simple math problem in order to post a comment?

even I can do that math…:-)

Small suggestion: If it is possible to change the button name, it would be a great reminder if “Submit Comment” could change to something like “Do The Math” or “Math to Comment.”

It’s not that big a deal to hit the Back button to complete the problem when I forget, but with that initial reminder that issue would be gone.

Oh and the main reason I even miss the request for math is that my two required Name and Mail are usally already filled in when I visit a new page. So, it’s kind of instinctive to think everything is all ready to go.

  23. 23 On September 3rd, 2007, Joyful Abode said:

Doug, I’m sorry that the math thing is throwing you off… I’m not sure how to change the code to say that, but I’ll look into it when I have more than a few minutes and see if it looks easy.

  24. 24 On September 3rd, 2007, Doug said:

Please, don’t consider it a complaint. It’s more of a poorly worded observation about interacting with the comments feature.

I still think the math much better than kaptchas or many other methods out there.
