Warm Spiced Apple Cider

Note: That’s Spiced, as in “with spices.” Not spiked, as in “with rum.” Although I did have rum there, thanks to Margo. And several people mentioned that it was extra-yummy with rum.

It’s a delightful beverage for an autumnal gathering, and it’s even good cold the next day (and reheats just fine).

Get some spices you think would be good with apple cider. I would’ve liked to have whole allspice, but the store didn’t have any. So I had whole cloves, ground allspice, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon sticks. I’ve heard ginger is good in it too.  Some people also like to put in orange slices or a splash of orange juice.

Get some cheesecloth, a few layers, and dump in a mixture of spices. I didn’t measure, but it smelled good to me, so I figured it was a safe ratio.

Tie it up with some kitchen twine (but all I had was “natural” cotton yarn, which worked fine). Here it looks rather like part of a mummy, but don’t worry… it’s good.

Dump it in a crock pot full of apple cider. Honestly, the cider I got is more like juice than unfiltered cider… but it was fine. So I’m sure even apple juice would work. The pot part of my crock pot can go on the stove, so I gave it a head start on the burner before I set it on the crock pot base to stay warm.

It was quite delicious! I just finished the last of it, reheated tonight. Lucky me… I get to make more on Friday for my Open House!

Maybe then I’ll take a photo that doesn’t make it look like you just found a body in the creek behind Uncle Joe’s house. (Am I revealing that I watch too much Bones via Netflix?)

Oh, and if you’re in town (Meridian, MS) comment if you want to come to the open house, and I’ll email you so you can find it. Everything is going to be 20% off at the open house, in person, one day only!

If you’re on my super-special mailing list, you already got an open-house-related super-special coupon code to use online if you can’t make it! :)

Hmm,I’m having the in-laws over for Thanksgiving, this would make a wonderful accompaniment to dessert, and perhaps I will make the pumpkin cake to go with it, in addition to pie, of course. Thanks for the great ideas!

Oooh, I just had a yummy idea. Bake the cake in a Bundt pan, and then drizzle some cream cheese frosting over the top. Now if I only had a Bundt pan….I guess I’ll just have to use the 9×13, I use that for everything.
