Day 2 of 30 Day Clutter-Free Countdown - Quote about Decluttering

Decluttering Tip of the Day

Have a reason you want to declutter.

Why are you doing this?

What priorities in your life are you supporting by decluttering the items in your home?

What are your goals?

You already know you want LESS. That’s why you’re here. But what do you want MORE of?

I touched on this a bit in the starter kit, on your commitment worksheet. There was a spot for filling out what you hope to GAIN from doing this challenge. Did that catch you off guard? I’m guessing it did, just a little.

We are so used to negative thinking, even when it doesn’t seem negative – what do we want to get rid of? What do we need less of? We want less stuff, less stress, less time spent cleaning, less frustration with lost items, and so on.

All of that is great, but it’s negative thinking. Subtractive thinking. It’s necessary, but adding positive thinking will help too.

What do you want more of?

More time to spend with your family? More energy for exercising, hobbies, or sports? More space to breathe? More focus for school or your job? More freedom for everything you feel is important?

  1. Great tools… thanks!

  2. Linda O' says:

This program really helps me stay on goal.
I came up with an idea that has really helped me — how to quickly ‘value’ items on a 1-to-10 scale. I decided, for me, things had to be an 8 or higher (I need lots of purging). So I can now look quickly at things and realize That’s a 6, that’s a 7.
Those baskets I have throughout the house, some of them are 8’s, but most of my baskets are 5’s and 6’s, and out they go! Mom’s jewelry drawer is dear (she passed), but really it’s a 7; her mother’s locket, though, is a 10. Try it!!

  3. Shelley says:

Great work everyone!! I love the things we find and hold on to:)This is such a freeing process!! Thank you so much Emily!!!! I did my 30 things last night and posted a few on the items for sale internal page at work and I have sold 4 things!! It’s nice to get a little for some of my unnecessary purchases to go directly to pay down debt! I am learning so much about myself and enjoying the excited feeling I get! Can’t wait to get home after work tonight to work on my 29 things for today!!!

  4. Marla says:

I got rid of 30+ shoes – some mine, mostly my kids. All the outgrown but still good shoes are in the donate box that I will have picked up at the end of the 30 day challenge. I was shocked at how many mismatched, torn, and generally useless shoes were sitting in our entry way shoe box.
I also found a bag of toys that I’d put aside from all my kid’s birthday parties last year. As they open their gifts, I set aside those that don’t fit our household and donate them. I guess I forgot to donate them last year but they’re going out this time!
This afternoon, all the kids will try on their winter gear – boots, hats, gloves, and snowsuits, and anything outgrown will get put in the donate box. I’ll add what’s needed (new boots, etc.) to the list of things to purchase. I’m super excited about how my front closet looks again!

  5. Andrea Richards says:

Oh, Carmen S! Not just me then. You have inspired me to make tomorrow’s (day 3) target the chest of drawers in daughter’s room. Five large drawers, only one and a half usable due to “stored” items.

  6. Sandra says:

love the pictures – it gives me hope. I’m clearly not the only packrat around.

  7. Jessica N says:

Dat 2 : 29 things? More like 290!!! I decluttered all the mail (most of it was junk mail) off our kitchen table!
