Decluttering Tip of the Day

Do it NOW.

There are a lot of strategies for decluttering slowly over time. One of the most popular ones for clothing is to hang all of your clothes with the hangers backwards (i.e., the hook is open toward the front, instead of the back). Then, as you wear clothing and wash it, put the hanger on the bar in the normal way. After a while (a season, 6 months, or a year), you’ll know which clothes you actually wear and which you don’t, and can safely get rid of.

Fine, I can see how that would be helpful if you honestly aren’t sure what you’re putting on your body each morning. But I think most of us have SOME idea about which clothes we wear and like, which clothes we wear just because they’re there even though we don’t like them very much or they fit weird or whatever, and which clothes never get worn, whether or not we like them.

What if instead we got rid of all the clothes we don’t like, including the things we DO wear, like that sweater that sits weird on our shoulders which irritates us every time, even though we love the color of it…? And then what if we make an effort to wear the clothes we do like, even the ones we don’t normally reach for?

If AFTER a good decluttering session, you want to try one of the slower, longer-term “solutions” like using backwards hangers, go for it.

But don’t let it stop you from letting go of a bunch of stuff NOW too.

    Just wanted to say thank you so much for this challenge! The way you present it just works so well with the way my brain works. 🙂 The whole “spend 15 minutes a day decluttering” concept never motivated me for very long, but your concept really helps me and I’ve cleared out SO much stuff from my house and I’m only halfway through. It feels SO good to finally get rid of all the junk I thought I should save for whatever rainy day and finally have neat, organized spaces where clutter once overflowed. I appreciate you very much.
