Day 25 of 30 Day Clutter-Free Countdown - Quote about Decluttering

Decluttering Tip of the Day

Gifts do not come with strings.

If there are conditionals, it’s not a real gift, and honestly, you’re welcome to return it to the giver.

But when someone gives you something out of love, the joy for the giver is in picking it out for you and in the giving. If they are too invested in what happens beyond that, that’s on them, not on you.

You have no obligation to keep gifts BECAUSE they were gifts.

Once you own the item, it’s yours to use, appreciate, love, dislike, hate, finish with, declutter, sell, or do whatever you will with it.

Think about when you give gifts to people… do you feel like they MUST use the gift in a certain way, or keep it forever, otherwise it’s disrespectful to you? Probably not. Hopefully not.

I’m not saying to pitch all gifts or that they’re trash once you’ve received them or anything like that… but if someone gives you some cookbooks because they know you love to cook, but they’re not your type of cuisine or you never use cookbooks or you flip through them and don’t get excited about the recipes, it’s REALLY actually okay to return them to the bookstore … get some store credit and buy yourself a book you’ll actually love reading.

Or give the cookbook to a friend you know will actually love and use it. Or donate it to the library.

Thank the gift giver for being so thoughtful – after all, you DO love to cook, and that’s something that person has noticed about you and wants to support.

But gifts do not come with strings.

No guilt, y’all. Gifts without guilt.
