Today, Boba is announcing (and I get to help!) their new 4G carrier. I’m really excited for this incarnation of our family’s favorite Soft Structured Carrier (SSC)!
The 3G was a wonderful improvement from the previous version, adding pockets, changing the foot strap closures from velcro to snaps, and adding a conversion option for newborn carrying. The waist band flipped up (toward the inside) and snapped, and if you re-threaded the buckles on the webbing, your Boba 3G was ready to carry a tiny baby!
The problem (for my family) with that was that rethreading takes a while, and if you have a baby and a toddler you’re using the carrier for (switching between the kids pretty frequently), it is a bit time consuming to have to re-thread the buckles all the time.
ENTER THE 4G.
No more waistband snapping or buckle flipping. The 4G converts to an infant carrier by adding a little attached butt-rest pillow thingy. The pillow has a snapped-in setting for the newest of newborns, which allows the baby’s legs to remain in the fetal tuck position. Then, the pillow can be unsnapped to a more open position, for when baby’s legs are spread into the ergonomic M position, but baby still needs a bit of a boost.
Up until now, I’ve always said a rolled-up receiving blanket is great under baby for that in-between stage, but this seems even better. It won’t unroll or fall out while you’re putting the carrier on and taking it off, and it will stay put while you’re positioning your baby.
The hood has also been modified in the 4G version, with longer straps so that you can snap one side diagonally to the other shoulder, creating a wrap-like head support for sleeping newbies. I’ve read that the hood material is a little bit thinner too, which is sure to be nice in summer heat!
One more positive change? The side webbing has been moved down a bit, so mamas who used to experience a bit of chafing under the arms from the 3G may find relief with the new version! So awesome that Boba pays attention to these details!
